menshn v2 is live!

Today is the culmination of months of hard work developing menshn 2.0. It’s an exciting day, and we finally get to take the wraps off the platform we’ve been building pretty much since we launched version 1.0 of the site back in June.

It’s been a great ride so far. We have 6,000+ registered users, and we’ve exceeded our targets with over 60,000 menshn posts since launch. Our users have created over 250 topics themselves so far!

We’ve listened to as much user feedback as possible and are now ready to let users into 2.0. As you’ll see first, the major changes are cosmetic, with a new interface giving emphasis on the content. I have a certain attachment to version 1.0, but even I recognise it wasn’t the prettiest site on the net! With 2.0 we hope to change that.

Mobile users too now have a dedicated site designed for smart phones - https://m.mobile.com - which makes it easier to follow your topics and post on the go.

Behind the scenes, we’ve invested in technology that filters menshns for spam in the same way your email inbox might be. Other social networking sites don’t block spam, but from the very beginning we wanted to create a clean, enjoyable platform free from things that degrade the experience.

The developments in 2.0 don’t stop here, and we’ll be rolling out a collection of tools and improvements over the coming weeks. We’re getting ready for a big push in the Autumn, which will see some exciting partnerships and major new features rolled out.

Introducing a feature many menshn users have asked for: Twitter integration.

It’s simple and quick to hook up your Twitter and menshn accounts. Just go to the ‘edit profile’ screen and enter your Twitter username; easy as that.

Now each time you post a Tweet containing a hashtag which matches a menshn room name/shortcode (e.g. if you Tweet with #election2012 or #women or #tech), your Tweets will be automatically imported into the appropriate menshn room.

menshn.com is a new social network, formed around a simple idea - talk, on topic. Starting initially with politics, menshn covers the US election, with rooms dedicated to the election and the Obama and Romney campaigns. As users join the site, menshn will expand to cover all topics its users are passionate about.

menshn is launching first in the US, and will add a UK site before the launch of the London 2012 Olympics, adding games-related rooms.

The founders come from the center-left and center right of politics respectively. Luke Bozier worked for Tony Blair at Labour HQ as head of digital communications and founded the local government utility municpo.com. Louise Mensch is a Conservative member of Parliament in the UK and author of 14 popular novels. Both are passionate about politics and social media.

Luke Bozier said ‘With all the great political forums out there, we noticed that there was no place to talk about politics live. Whereas Twitter is not organised around topics, on menshn you have a permanent place to go online to talk about the things you’re most interested in. menshn quite simply caters for passions, and the best ideas are often the most simple ones.’

Louise Mensch said ‘We’re thrilled to be launching menshn as the election cycle gets into gear. On menshn political junkies like me can talk live to their peers about every poll, every swing state, every twist and turn of the world’s most enthralling political contest. And as we grow, we look forward to adding rooms and topics as the community drives demand. You can also donate to your favoured candidate right in-room. So join in and start the debate!’

Want to get friends who live in different cities in one virtual place to discuss a baseball game or an election? Get them to gather round your personal menshn by sending them to http://menshn.com/person/yourname (e.g. http://menshn.com/person/Louise).

You can turn your personal menshn off and on whenever it suits you, and only people you subscribe to and who subscribe back can access it.

menshn is the place to talk on topic. Now you can talk on topic in your own virtual space.

This is your menshn points statement and the community’s points scoreboard.

How do you get points? Each time someone clicks ‘rate’ next to one of your menshns, you’re awarded 1 point. Each time someone new subscribes to you, you’re awarded 5 points. When you favourite a room for the first time, you’re awarded another 5 points. So the better chat you put out, the quicker your points score goes up.

menshn is designed to reward intelligent chat.
